With a dryer, the part that fails and the reason it failed are usually two different things. The reason is almost always the vent. A blocked vent makes the machine work harder, blows the thermal fuse, and gets misdiagnosed as a dead dryer. It's also a genuine fire risk, which is why we check the venting on every dryer call whether or not that's what you booked us for.

Before you call: A dryer that smells hot or burnt should be unplugged and left alone until it's been looked at. Lint and heat are the exact combination behind most household dryer fires.

Symptoms, causes and fixes

Find your symptom below. This is genuinely how we work through a call — it may also tell you the fault is something you can clear yourself, in which case you've saved a visit.

SymptomLikely causeWhat the fix involves
Runs but produces no heatBlown thermal fuse, failed heating element, or a faulty cycling thermostatThe thermal fuse blows because of a blocked vent, so the vent gets cleared as part of the job.
Takes two or three cycles to dryRestricted or blocked venting, clogged lint path, or a weak blowerUsually resolved by clearing the vent run. The most common dryer complaint we get.
Drum not turningSnapped drive belt, seized idler pulley, or a failed motorBelts and pulleys get replaced. A failed motor is the one that needs a repair-or-replace conversation.
Won't start at allFailed door switch, thermal fuse, or start switchDoor switches are a very common failure — frequently mistaken for a dead machine.
Loud rumbling or squealingWorn drum rollers, glides or idler pulleyA roller and glide kit is a routine replacement that makes the machine sound new again.
Clothes come out damp on auto cyclesFailed moisture sensor, or residue coating the sensor barsOften just cleaning the sensor bars. Dryer sheets leave a film that fools the sensor.
Burning or hot smellLint accumulation against the heating element or in the ventStop using it and call. This is the fault we treat most urgently.

The ones worth understanding

Venting is the real problem more often than the dryer

Long, crushed or lint-packed vent runs cause most of the heat-related faults we attend, especially in the townhouse stock around Meadowvale, Milton and Lisgar where the laundry closet is far from an exterior wall. Replacing a thermal fuse without clearing the vent just means it blows again.

Gas versus electric

We repair both. Gas dryers add an igniter, gas valve coils and a flame sensor to the list of possible faults, and those are their most common failures — all replaceable parts.

Stacked units

Common in condos and townhouses. The dryer has to come down off the washer to be serviced, which needs two people and clear access. Tell us it's stacked when you book.

Repair or replace?

Dryers are the most repair-worthy major appliance. The mechanical parts stay available for well over a decade, so unless the drum or cabinet is damaged, or the motor has gone on an already-old machine, repair almost always wins.

We don't publish flat rates, because the same symptom can have a minor cause or a major one and any number we printed would be wrong for someone. Here's how the money works instead: We charge a diagnostic fee on the first visit, payable that day. If you go ahead with the repair, that fee comes off the final bill. If you decide not to proceed, it covers the callout and the technician's time. You get the repair price before any work starts, and every repair carries 30 days on parts and labour for the same issue.

Questions

Why does my dryer need two cycles now when it used to take one?
Almost always restricted venting. Lint builds up gradually in the duct run, airflow drops, and the machine can't carry moisture away. Clearing the vent usually restores it completely — and it removes a fire risk at the same time.
Is a dryer that won't heat worth fixing?
Nearly always yes. The parts involved — thermal fuse, element, thermostat — stay available for most machines well past ten years old.
Do you clean dryer vents?
We clear the vent as part of diagnosing and repairing a heat or drying-time fault, because otherwise the repair won't hold. Tell us if you'd like the full run checked while we're there.
Is the diagnostic free?
We charge a diagnostic fee on the first visit, payable that day. If you go ahead with the repair, that fee comes off the final bill. If you decide not to proceed, it covers the callout and the technician's time.
Is it worth repairing or should I replace it?
Dryers are the most repair-worthy major appliance. The mechanical parts stay available for well over a decade, so unless the drum or cabinet is damaged, or the motor has gone on an already-old machine, repair almost always wins.
How soon can you come out?
Usually the same day or the next. We're open 7am – midnight, 7 days a week and cover all of Mississauga plus Etobicoke, Oakville, Milton and Brampton.
